Summary/Abstract: Julia Jordanova’s article „Polemical fields (M. Arnaudov – D. Marinov)“ deals with the polemic between two eminent Bulgarian scientists – the folklore authority Mihail Arnaudov and the ethnographer Dimitar Marinov. The main theme is the legendary figure of the Bulgarian culture – Boyan the Magician. The article omits some questions of this polemic, for example the etymological relation between Boyan the Magician and the popular custom „Boyanetz“ or its place in the general system of spring maiden festivities. The author focuses her attention on the following aspect of this dispute – is the legend of Boyan the Magician an authentic folklore discovery or a product of Dimitar Marinov’s ethnological mystification. The article object isn’t an independent response to this topic, but an investigation of the polemic chronology, the theoretical and methodological aspects of the discussion. The research analyses the historical viewpoints of both scientists and their affiliation to different periods and trends of the Bulgarian philology development. The article studies the key position of Mihail Arnaudov in this debate. In his book „D. Marinov and the Bulgarian folklore“ Mihail Arnaudov from Мaccuser“ turns into юdefender“ of his opponent recognizing his merits as filed-worker. Some personal contacts between Mihail Arnaudov and Dimitar Marinov as individuals, who have started their intellectual career at the High School for boys in Russe in the 90-ies of the 19-th century, are examined.
