Summary/Abstract: The beginning of the article provides information about the etymology and meanings of the terms involved in the theme. The study continues by establishing the relationship between society, religion and the rituals of purifying and cleaning, showing their importance for Roman citizens. The article also shows the attitude of human beings towards poetry and their theories about it. There are selected authors to prove the purifying purpose of poetry: Lucretius who wants to save people by philosophic poetry, by a wise attitude, Horatius who highlights the faults of the society, hoping to change it in a good way, Ovidius, who uses poetry to save his mind from solitude.
