Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the creative biography of a Vilnius citizen, musician Ludwik Nowicki (about 1830–1886). Nowicki’s biography has been unresearched for lack of sources up to now. A talented pianist and composer was born in Vilnius and lived there thirty year. The article strives to establish the guidelines of Nowicki’s activity (pianist, composer, and conductor) and describe the features of his creative works, also to underline his achievements in the area of the historical polonaise genre. Attention to the topics of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth history and interest to Adam Mickiewicz’s creative works were of great significance for Nowicki. On the basis of new sources, this article evaluates the creative and educational work of L. Nowicki in Lithuania and in deep Russia (Ufa, Kazan), where he was expatriated in 1863 as a revolt participant. The creative biography of Ludwik Nowicki distinctively supplements the portrait gallery of Vilnius’ musicians in the researches of Lithuanian music history. This article discusses musical compositions that are exhibited for the first time.
