Summary/Abstract: In the current paper, Joseph Levinson-Benari, a little known Lithuanian artist of Jewish descent, is introduced. Benari was born to the Jewish family of Mykolas (Moses) and Sofi Levinsons in Vilnius on 1 January 1890. From 1914 till 1918 the artist studied at St. Petersburg Art Academy, where he acquired a degree in architecture and got acquainted with Vladimiras Dubeneckis, a friend who subsequently made a great impact on him. In ca. 1919 Benari returned to Lithuania. Having settled in Kaunas, he became an active member of the artistic and cultural scene of Lithuania of that period. Benari manifested himself in several fields: architecture, graphic art, monument protection, set design, and theatre. Having moved to France in the 1930s, he worked in the film industry and graphic art. Knowledge about this artist contributes to the history of Lithuania’s cultural scene between 1918 and 1939.
