Summary/Abstract: Nadia Boulanger was known to the vast majority of musicians of the 20th century. For 75 years she taught many students from different countries. She was appreciated as a severe and demanding teacher. Some criticized her conservatism, but in the eyes of others she was more than just a great, dedicated music professional: in the memories of her students we perceive that in the triangular relationship between the teacher, the student and music there appears a depth where the function of music exceeds mere learning. For Nadia Boulanger, music was something much more important than what could be transmitted by the teacher and learnt by the student. She was able to awaken her students to the musical experiences they themselves did not suspect existed. Maybe that is because Nadia Boulanger thought more about the mystery of music and its wonder than about techniques and methods.
