Power tests in contemporary Lithuanian theatre

Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Lithuanian theatre, in one or another way reflecting and reacting to the social reality, often faces the phenomenon that is highly important for social relations – the phenomenon of power. Therefore, the article analyses the problem of power representation on theatre stage.The concept of power formulated by Dennis Hume Wrong was chosen for the theoretical basis of the article. The American sociologist relates power with intentions, differentiates it from the concept of influence, and in such way regards the psychological aspect of power relations. Therefore, Wrong’s theory is appropriate to apply it for the analysis of dramatic theatre. Wrong’s concept of power and classification of power forms helps to reveal different power representations and the dynamics of power relations in the scenic discourse. The analysis of the two examples of contemporary Lithuanian theatre – “Visuomenės priešas” (2011) directed by Jonas Vaitkus, and “Barikados” (2014) directed by Valters Sīlis – show the variety and dynamics of power forms that appear when different social structures are presented on stage. on the one hand, the representation of power relations exists as the opposition to the freedom theme in these two performances. on the other hand, representing such dynamics of power forms Lithuanian performances reveal the idea of power as a changeable, possible to reform, and unstable structure of relations.
