Summary/Abstract: The last 10-15 years of Bulgarian higher education are marked by discussion, which can be explained with two major questions “What is the students’ education – social service or business?” and “If it is business, who is the recipient of education results – the students or the companies hiring those students?”. Now that we are coming to the conclusion that higher education is business, not a service, the second question is still remains open. Current students have a claim on that they are customers and teaching personnel have to make them happy. This is rather contradicting to the global view in the USA, Korea, Japan and Western Europe. In those countries results are measured by the industrial success not by emotions. This paper discusses results of authors’ investigations on the new trends in ICT industry, the professional realization of young engineers from departments having strong computer-oriented education and some possible problems they will have in the near future. The last 10-15 years of Bulgarian higher education are marked by discussion, which can be explained with two major questions “What is the students’ education – social service or business?” and “If it is business, who is the recipient of education results – the students or the companies hiring those students?”.
