Phraseologisms marked by lexemes pertaining to the processes of thought and speech in the works by Stefan Żeromski

Summary/Abstract: The topic of the following paper is the analysis of selected phraseologisms in the works by Stefan Żeromski. This category has been narrowed in this paper only to the phraseologisms composed only of lexems pertaining to the processes of speaking and thinking. The background for this analysis was “Myśl i mowa”, the 7th volume of “Słownictwo pism Stefana Żeromskiego” (The Dictionary of The Works by Stefan Żeromski), which was composed on the basis of the complete literary works by Żeromski, as well as his “Dzienniki” (Diaries) and selected journalistic texts. The vocabulary related to speaking and thinking is dominated by verbs (60.3% of the whole of lexemes analyzed in the dictionary). The components of the phraseologisms are mainly nouns (66.4%), less frequently verbs (31.5%) and occasionally other parts of speech (2.1%). Due to the syntactic form of phraseologisms a division was made into expressions, idioms and phrases. Among 421 phraseologisms excerpted from Żeromski’s works the most frequent are idioms (83.4%), however, their constitutive element are not mainly verbs related to speaking and thinking but nouns pertaining to this semantic field, particularly myśl (thought), słowo (word), pamięć (memory). Expressions are much less frequent (10.8%), and phrases amount to only 5.8% of the phraseologisms analyzed here.
