TRADITIONAL WEDDING CUSTOMS AND RITES FROM LOVETCH REGION

Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the system of wedding customs and rituals from Lovetch region. The author follows the traditional framework of Bulgarian wedding customs thus pointing out the registered in the area practices with local and regional distribution. For the detailed description there has been taken into consideration evidence dating from the and of XIX to the middle of XX century. A reconstruction of the regional pattern of wedding customs and rites in their common sequence is presented. Basic ritual complexes and components such as making the ritual loaves of bread (as a beginning of the wedding cycle), the principal ritual personages, preparing ritual objects and articles, the first wedding night, univeiling the bride and taking her to fetch water, etc. , are provided.
