Summary/Abstract: With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty the EU has acquired new competences in the area of international investment. As the world’s biggest investor and recipient of foreign direct investment, the EU’s investment policy will have considerable impact on the future shape of international investment law. This article analyses the expected content of EU investment agreements including the scope of application, substantive standards, and dispute settlement by scrutinizing available EU documents and existing scholarship. As a special point of reference, the recently concluded investment chapter of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is considered for possible wording and structure of future EU investment agreements.
