The motif of Lord's Supper in Ingmar Bergman's filmwork

Summary/Abstract: Ingmar Bergman is one of the directors who show a particularly strong interest in great existential dilemma and religious issues. His interest undoubtedly stems from the fact that he was son of a Church of Sweden pastor. Paradoxically, historians and theoreticians discussing Bergman often ignore the facts. Egil Törnqvist explores the motif of Lord’s Supper that very often appears in Bergman’s films although sometimes in an oblique way. Törnqvist reflects on how Begrman’s attitude toward religiosity and religion manifests and changes.
