THE TRIANGULAR DESIRE IN REBREANU’S NOVEL ION

Summary/Abstract: In this study we approach the issue of Liviu Rebreanu’s 1920 novel Ion, applying the most important elements and ideas of Rene Girard’s theory on mimetic desire. We wish to analyse the extent to which such a lecture is appropriate, and we try to find answers to questions referring to Ion’s desire to obtain everything in life as a result of the mimetic desire mechanism. Ion’s tragic fall may be interpreted, in our view, as a result of a subtle and subconscious mechanism in which imitating others and assuming others’ wishes play a key role.
