Summary/Abstract: The article looks into an interesting but griven insufficient topical attention event in the history of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, namely of the town of Varna under Ottoman rule. Its dating is mentioned by many authors, it is referred to in some sources and yet it remains not accurately established, since the years from 1600 to 1610 are indicated. The analysis is based on all the already known and on some not adequately used authors and sources, it follows their logic and comparison so as to make more precise the possible year of the Cossack attack on and destruction of Varna. The dating of this event is given meaning through the rich contents of the historical circumstances with which were associated the Cossacks, the relations of the Ottoman Porte and the countries with which it was at war then. In this way, the date of one at first glance regional event finds itself at the centre of different interests and international relations in that historical period.
