Summary/Abstract: Within the field of comparative and international studies of education, a theoretical debate concerning the nature and extent of globalization thrives between those known as “world culture” theorists, positioned within neo-institutionalism, and their critics. Human rights education (HRE) is an emergent field of educational theory and practice that falls within the context of this debate. This article identifying both theoretical and empirical gaps in the research to date explores the thematic approaches that have been taken by scholars in their studies of HRE.
