Summary/Abstract: This article presents results of the interviews with people involved in projects run by The Central Examination Board aimed at the developing new approaches to different aspects of the examination process. The purpose of this research was to gather information that would allow to characterize the ideas underlying the reforms of the educational system recently carried out in Poland. In order to obtain the approval of the teaching profession and to emphasize the continuity of changes, interviewed participants of the Central Examination Board’s projects consider the reforms to be a modernization. They were convinced that changes in the educational system cannot be revolutionary. It seems that the main motive force for conducted reforms was a widespread recognition of the need for changes in both the form and methods of examination. Additionally, the current formula of the matriculation exam was perceived as dysfunctional. According to interviewed people, this was caused by the development of new communication technologies.
