Summary/Abstract: Markiewka considers the relationship between two approaches to the question of interpretation: constructivism and intentionalism. His point of departure is Danuta Szajnert’s study, Intencja autora i interpretacja – między inwencją a atencją [Authorial Intention and Interpretation: Between Invention and Respect/Attention]. In this book, the Polish researcher upholds a position that she calls critical/sceptical intentionalism. One of Szajnert’s merits is that she is careful not to overstress the antagonism in the debate on interpretation or to portray two positions entirely opposed to each other. Nonetheless, at times she still magnifies the distance between intentionalism and constructivism (a position she critiques), thus reverting to an overly oppositional understanding of the debate on interpretation. Markiewka, drawing above all on Richard Rorty’s work, attempts to show that Szajnert’s position is more closely related to the constructivist position than she herself suggests.
