New Data on the “Bulgarian” Chants in the Byzantine Music Manuscripts

Summary/Abstract: The article provides frew information about the "Bulgarian" chants in the Byzantine music manuscripts. The attribution of Joannes Glykys (14th c.) of the “Bulgarian” plagal polyeleos in the second authentic echos (a cycle on Psalm 135), usually indicated only as “Bulgarian and Western”, is confirmed. The byname of Joannes Glykys "Δυσικος" (the Westener?), introduced by A. Kirmitsakis, explains the emergence of this attribution. In the newly discovered copies of the well-known "Bulgarian" plagal polyeleos in the first authentic echos (a cycle on Psalm 134) important is the information that instead of the customary inscription "ή Βουλγάρα", the chant was also called "Βουλγαρίτζα" a denotation customary for the kratema of Joannes Koukouzeles (14th c.) in the first plagal echos. The newly discovered second kratema of Koukouzeles in the same echos enriches the hitherto known range of the “Bulgarian” repertory in the late post-Byzantine music sources.
