Summary/Abstract: The chant book, which is now most often referrend to as the Akolouthiai, appeared in Byzantium at the beginning of the 14th century. It introduced several important features not present in the earlier music books, including the liturgical arrangement of the chants. Among the liturgical sequences contained in the early Akolouthiai, the Order of the Morning Office stands as a unique formation, combining psalmody and hymnody for Sunday, festal and Lenten occasions, as well as characteristic features of both monastic and cathedral worship. The Order of the Morning Office appears also to be the center of significant structural changes of the Akolouthiai, which apparently took place in the late 14th and early 15th centuries: the elements of the cathedral rite were removed, while the regrouping of the chants abolished the bounds between the evening and the morning sections of the book.
