Summary/Abstract: Unlike the delayed end-of-semester summative assessment (SA), which may come too late to impact on learning enhancement, quizzes represent a great tool in ESP formative assessment (FA) as they offer students instant feedback on key aspects that need to be improved. Features such as question/student answer breakdown, practice of lower and higher level skills, analytics, etc. offer teachers a timely picture of what they need to re-teach or amend. The paper will present empirical results of using different online Edmodo-generated and Edmodo-embedded quizzes (ESL video, Photopeach) as optional assignments in Medical English learning with students (N=35) of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Tîrgu Mureș, which can serve as models for ongoing learning-oriented assessment and measurement of teaching effectiveness in other ESPs. Quantitative and qualitative data will demonstrate among others, that employment of quizzes in Medical English provides practice opportunities, increases student awareness, reflection on progress and stress-free achievement as well as confidence in performance during summative evaluations.
