Summary/Abstract: Marian Płachecki responds to Henryk Markiewicz’s charges (cf. Teksty Drugie, 5/2010) with respect to his book Wojny domowe. Szkice z antropologii słowa publicznego w dobie zaborów (1800-1880) [‘Civil Wars: Essays in Anthropology of the Public Word in the Age of Poland’s Partitions (1800-1880)’]. Płachecki approaches Markiewicz’s commentary as the opening of a discussion on the critical condition of research on positivism in the history of Polish literature and culture. Ideological preferences continue to weigh down on current research; as a consequence, there appears an effort to justify ‘the Left’ at the expense of other actors on the public scene, which was extremely polarised following the events of the January Uprising. A historian’s task is nonetheless to understand and demonstrate the quandaries of a dispute, rather than to solve it by indicating who was allegedly right.
