Summary/Abstract: This article presents ‘the garden’ in two ways: on the one hand, as a stimulus that shapes the recipient’s responses and actions by acting on specific areas of his or her brain; and on the other hand, as an instrument that affects society. The two perspectives, neuro-aesthetic and ideological, complement one another. They disclose the persuasive power of the garden in its perceived proximity to the natural environment: the meanings that are created in the garden are interpreted as immanent to nature. Kaczmarczyk discusses how something saturated with meaning can be perceived as semantically transparent.
