Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which news interview questions can be applied to teaching/learning English for Environmental Engineering in tertiary education. The point of departure is the assumption that questions, due to their complexity and variation, both at the syntactic and interactional (i.e., pragmatic) levels, offer appropriate language samples for reflection and practice in language learning. The data for this investigation has been selected from news interviews on environmental topics. This allows the learners to explore an authentic context in which questions occur. By using the theoretical framework of Conversational Analysis, the analysis reported in this paper identifies syntactic and interactional features of news interview questions which are thought to be relevant to language learning.
