Summary/Abstract: As a result of the three Polish partitions, the Polish state ceased to exist on the map of Europe for 123 years. The tone was set, however, much earlier through the unfortunate combination of geopolitics of an emerging Russian Empire and the anarchicpolitical system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that specifically positioned the state for its demise. Nevertheless, this lesson of history provides insight which is valuable in today’s context.
