Summary/Abstract: Measurement of archival material and with this associated data capturing belong to those elements of archival description, which are more and more important. The current practice in this area is very different, not only at national level but also within particular archival institutions. Data about quantity and extent have different material-informational values. Archivists use these data in all important segments of archival activities: at the ingesting of archival material, at repository management, by archival description, material protection, use of archival material etc. In complex archival information systems these data receive additional value. We call it “a reference value”. It provides a basic public faith of the contents metadata archival information systems. Archivists realize this value in such a way that the data quantity and extent are captured from at least two different trusted sources. In the field of preservation of electronic documents, these data become an integral part of the checksums and thus the element of public faith of the electronic archives. Data capturing about quantity and extent into the archival information systems must be designed so that they can be directly applicable not only as part of source system, but also in different target systems. At the same time, the data from this description element must serve together with other elements as entity of the public faith of the metadata archival information system as well as in primary archival system. To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to clearly define the units of measurement and measurement systems at all levels, for both physical as well as electronic archival material. At the same time, it is necessary to develop and standardize measurement system for measuring the completely preserved archival material. This solution must be based on logic and not on physical entities of measurement.
