Summary/Abstract: The discussion between science and religious belief has played a crucial role in the development of both Western science and culture in the approximately 400 years since the birth of modern science. During the modern period many philosophers have assumed that science is incompatible with belief in God. This belief became more widespread among philosophers during the first half of the twentieth century for reasons that included the epistemology of positivism, the prestige accorded to scientists and their work, and an unfortunate inability to distinguish between metaphysical and methodological naturalism.
