Summary/Abstract: Motivation plays a significant role in the process of language acquisition. Factors contributing to language learning are complex, and the role motivation plays in achievement is a particularly interesting question that deserves to be studied. However, an examination not only of motivation’s contribution to learning outcomes, but also factors demotivating language learning should be considered. The aim of the research was to assess the English language learners’ integrative and instrumental motivational factors of learning English at school and university, to define the relevance and characteristics of integrity and instrumentality in EFL as well as determine and analyze possible demotivators affecting a learner’s failure in EFL acquisition.Results. The unwillingness to study English or even failure in meeting the requirements of the university programme was determined by several demotivating factors in learning English at the university such as anxiety, lack of self-confidence and lack of enjoyment in learning English. It is important to identify students’ purposes and needs and to develop proper motivational strategies. Ways should be found to connect integrative motivation with instrumental motivational factors that can be brought to a classroom setting.
