Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to analyze the nature and strength of literature’s impact on the self-consciousness of the Russian society. The author points out the historical mechanism of emergence of a new form of novel, one in which the presence of political commentary became a generic feature. The poetics of this sub-genre, as well as issues tackled in it, are further characterized.
