Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the poetry of the literary theorist Miroslav Červenka (1932-2005). Miroslav Červenka wrote eight collections of poems; the first collection was published in 1953, the last collection in 1996. The paper describes the occurrence of individual metres and studies the development of Červenka’s poetics from the metrically regular poems from the first collection, through the metrically loose poems from the collections in 1960’s, to Červenka’s formal experiments. The prevailing metre of Miroslav Červenka’s poems is an iamb (mainly pentameter). The paper analyses the semantics of metre and the motivation for the use of individual metres, which are based on both their internal (metre as an icon) and external (metre as a symbol, metrical quotation) characteristics.
