Summary/Abstract: The author points out that the theory of creatio ex nihilo proposed by Thomas Aquinas arises from a double inspiration. Firstly, it consists of Christianity, or more precisely of the revelation transmitted by the biblical authors and being subject of theological reflection in the Church. Secondly it consists of efforts of these philosophers whose aim was to discover – in the way of reason – the beginning and the metaphysical basis of all reality. Both trends of consideration are merged in reflection of Aquinas, because these trends provided ideas and ways of thinking, thanks to which he could presented in the Summa contra Gentiles philosophical arguments in favor of the theory of creatio ex nihilo as a result of metaphysical inquiry. The aim of the analysis by the author of the article is to present some stages in the history of theological concept and term ‘creatio ex nihilo’, being the context in discovering the truth of creation out from nothing.
