Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to identify weaknesses in innovation activities of enterprises and other institutions in Slovakia according to Summary Innovation Index. The article presents data collected in research made by several European institutions (Joint Research Centre, Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Italian National Research Council). Consequently we propose tools and ideas for eliminating of identified problems and barriers and recommendation for strengthening of innovation activities in small and medium sized enterprises. Recommendations are orientated to the field of financing, governmental supporting tools, which should stimulate innovation activities among enterprises, to field of strategic decision making of owners and managers of enterprises and cooperation possibilities among enterprises in Slovakia.
