Summary/Abstract: The relationship between demographic characteristics of regional units and the level of economic development is mutually determined. It is often subject of research in our country from experts and organizations. The paper considers the relationship between basic demographic characteristics and internal migration in Bulgaria and how they impact on the level of economic development of the individual regional units. The vicious circle is the following: stronger migration – older population in declining regions – lower level of socio-economic development in them. Based on the international comparison of EU countries unenviable position of Bulgaria as a country with the largest regional differences is shown.
