Dr. Karel Farský and his Theology of Czech History

Summary/Abstract: The knowledge of national history played a significant role in lives and works of Catholic modernists. Especially ThDr. PhDr. František Loskot (1870–1932) focused on studying history. At the beginning of 1920 thanks to the effort of a radical part of Czech Catholic modernists, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, whose interwar theologians and historians adopted elaborated postures on Czech history as well as on period disputes about its sense, was established. ThDr. Karel Farský (1880–1927) took a prominent position among them. His interest in historical topics began during his studies at the Prague Academic Grammar School in years 1892–1900. The theologian gradually realized that historiography played an important social role in the Czech 19th and early 20th century history. That is why he created his theological concretization of Czech history under the influence of works of many historians (E. Denis, F. Palacký, A. Rezek, V. V. Tomek, Z. Winter etc.). A certain role in his effort was also played by his political affiliation with the Czechoslovak National Democratic Party since 1918. Apart from him and following in his footsteps, the Czech history in the interwar Czechoslovak Hussite Church was discussed by Emil Dlouhý-Pokorný (1867–1936), Jan Plešinger (1875–1952) and PhDr. Viktor Šinták (1906–1979).
