Definitions of the Astronomical Terms in the {Dictionary of the Medieval Latin from Polish Sources}

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents definitions of selected astronomical terms contained in the Dictionary of the Medieval Latin from Polish sources: “deferens”, “epicycles”, “armilla” and “astrolabium”. For comparison purposes, there are also shown definitions of these terms contained in other dictionaries of medieval Latin (Latin-Czech and Latin-German) and in the dictionary of the Polish language, published by PWN. The author presents thedifficulties of defining astronomical terms, especially those relating to pre-Copernicanastronomy. She also tries to answer the question of how detailed a definition should be, in order to be grasped by an uninitiated reader.
