Did Constantine Kostenechki Know the History of the Old Testament Translation from Hebrew into Hellenic

Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with the interpretation of a passage from the “Skazanie” by Constantine Kostenechki describing the history of the Septuagint. According to the translation into Modern Bulgarian and the paraphrase of the textual excerpt one gets the impression that according to Constantine Kostenechki alongside with the first translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew into New Testament texte were translated too. The analysis shows that for the mediaeval man-of-letters the translation of the Septuagint was a lengthy process which had started with the translation of the Pentateuch under Ptolemy II Philadelphus, and later on the other Old Testament books were translated and the translation was completed in 130 B.C. The causes for the discrepancies that appeared between Constantine Kostenechki’s words and the translation and the paraphrase are also clarified: change in the punctuation, as well as overlooking the Biblical allusion.
