Semantics of Basic Colour Terms in the Estonians' and Russians' Worldviews

Summary/Abstract: Colour is one of the most important elements of a person's worldview. The aim of this research is to reveal the common and the specific in the semantic features of Estonian and Russian colour terms and their role in the Estonians' and Russians' worldviews. For that purpose we have used corpora, phraseological dictionaries and an associative experiment. Colour conceptualisation may have significant distinctions in different languages. Language, its semantic structure, and culture have a marked influence on their carriers' ideas about colour. Even in the case of large coincidences in the literal meaning of colour terms there are a lot of distinctions in their metaphorical meanings. Research data shows that although the Russians' and Estonians' respective worldview fragments have a large number of common features, there are also some considerable distinctions motivated culturally and linguistically.
