Identity and Schismogenesis: On the Socio-Cultural Background of Ukrainian Crisis

Summary/Abstract: Current Ukrainian crisis is the result of giving political values to the existing social and cultural differences. For a long time the leading political parties in Ukraine have used these differences as a tool of political mobilization. Thus the construction of regional identities and the politicization of cultural differences became the basis for the political differentiation that subsequently led to the escalation of political confrontation. The article examines this problem from the viewpoint of (meta)communication about cultural differences, which creates conditions for the intensification of cultural differentiation (schismogenesis) and the emergence of “identity politics”.
