Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion about the cross-cultural communication in a situation of crisis. Crises are unwished disruptions; they can however become turning points, as they force action in terms of overcoming the circumstances. Cross-cultural communication has its own barriers that can also cause a crisis. Next to the obstacles like language, insecurity or ethnocentrisms, which are broadly described in the literature, the present article discusses satire in a case study. In France, satire was at the beginning of 2015 the reason for a crisis with cultural and religious background. The text illustrates the reciprocal effect of the cross-cultural communication. On the one hand, during the attacks at the offices of Charlie Hebdo this kind of communication has been rapidly interrupted, but on the other hand the solidarity with the victims expressed by several million of people on the streets is the evidence of the potential of the cross-cultural communication to overcome crises.
