Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the phenomenon of Christian martyrdom in connection with the functionaries of the early church. Their authority was enhanced by their willingness to die as martyrs. Luke describes in the Acts of the Apostles the sacrifice of the first martyr, Stephen, as an expression of the Spirit’s gift. Polycarp of Smyrna and Ignatius of Antioch were important witnesses and pastors of the early church who were willing to die for their convictions of faith. Martyrdom was so highly valued that those who were subjected to it but survived often obtained the status of presbyters – priests. Once the church became free, the lack of courage and bravery of some church servants caused a Donatist Schism. Greater respect was given to those who had persevered.
