The Slavic Translation of the Sermons of Avva Dorotheos

Summary/Abstract: The Sermons of avva Dorotheos (who lived in the 6th–7th centuries in Palestine) have two Slavic translations in the Middle Ages. One of them is South Slavonic from the middle of the 14th century and was probably made in a monastery near the capital of Bulgaria, Turnovo. A list of 57 Bulgarian, Serbian and Russian copies from the 14th to the 19th century is given in the paper. This translation was used also in the first Slavic printed edition of the Sermons, published in Kiev in 1628. The other translation was made earlier,probably in the 13th century in Russia, but there are only two copies of it available. We find often the Sermons of avva Dorotheos together with the works of other fathers as a part of huge monastic anthologies. Since the 15th century the complete body of the sermons has been copied mainly in Russia. Among the South Slavs only some of the sermons have been copied as part of different miscellanies. The Sermons of avva Dorotheos which were most spread in Russia but in the South Slavonic translation are an example for the South Slavonic influence in Russia in the Late Middle Ages.
