Summary/Abstract: The Christian arts of Bulgaria are seen in all their glory nowhere better than in Preslav, capital of the state from 893 to 972. It is outside the fortified palace that the most interesting remains are found, for the whole area was dotted with churches and monasteries, many preserving unusual plans and decoration. Of all these, none is more puzzling than the famous Round Church. Also known as the Golden Church, or the Church of Symeon, the Round Church was uncovered by Bulgarian archeologists Mijatev and Gospodinov in 1927-19281. Since the appearance of the first monograph in 1932, the dating and origins of this remarkable structure have been debated. This paper offers speculation on a new source which may have influenced the creation of Symeon's unique structure.
