How to reconcile individual liberty and social life? Study of the "New Utopia". A politico-moral reflection of the Rousseau-ist type

Summary/Abstract: Cet article étudie un auteur méconnu du XVIIIe siècle, Lepeintre-Desroches, qui publie 50 ans après Voltaire une suite de Candide, Prosper, ou le pessimisme. Il s’intéresse particulièrement au chapitre iii du volume III, intitulé « Nouvelle Utopie », qui se fonde sur une lecture de Rousseau, reprenant les problématiques rousseauistes sur la liberté de l’individu et les impératifs de l’organisation sociale : comment concilier liberté individuelle et vie politique, éthique individuelle et bonheur collectif ? This paper presents the work of an eighteenth-century unrecognized author, Lepeintre-Desroches, who published fifty years after Voltaire a sequel to Candide, Prosper, or Pessimism. It focuses more specifically on Chapter III of Volume III, entitled “New Utopia”, which relies on a reading of Rousseau and which builds upon the Rousseauist themes on the liberty of the individual and the requirements of social organization : how to reconcile individual liberty and political life, individual ethics and collective happiness ?
