Summary/Abstract: In 1814 the Imprimerie de P. Didot l'aîné pubished Voyages d’Ali Bey el Abbassi en Afrique et en Asie pendant les années 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806 et 1807 by Domingo Badía y Leblich aka Ali Bey. Ali Bey is a cryptonym, the author being a secret agent of Charles IV, the king of Spain. The book of Ali Bey is the report of an explorer and a cartographer, containing pre-Darwinian descriptions of landscapes and detailed maps of Africa. Behind the naïf and exotic approach to Eastern issues, very popular at that time, Ali Bey propose an acute philological and literary analysis of Eastern topics. This article aims at providing a philological and literary reading of the text of Ali Bey, in relation with the coordinates defined by Edward Said in his must-read essay Orientalism (1978).
