Summary/Abstract: The Syrian war is primarily a replacement conflict between Shi’ite Iran and SunniSaudi Arabia, played out on the territory of Syria. Iran uses the Syrian regime for itsown purposes, while Saudi Arabia controls the rebels, and both urge their allies tomilitary involvement. This results in internationalization of the conflict and createsa new global terrorist threat by the Islamic State. After five years, however, one cansee that neither party is able to get an advantage, which is why their protectors mustcome to an agreement and force the fighting sides to make concessions.
