Summary/Abstract: The controversial legacy of Paul de Man has excited emotions among researchers since the discovery of his collaborationist writings from the Second World War. As a consequence, it became impossible to make a simple description of the relationship between the public and the private side of the biography of this famous deconstructionist. His disciples, defending the importance of legacy, have glossed over this infamous episode, as though it did not constitute a significant issue; for others, especially his methodological opponents, his wartime journalism provided an opportunity to negate the value of his entire work, or even deconstruction itself. Published in 2014, "The Paul de Man Notebooks", edited by Martin McQuillan, reveal the complicated relationship between the private and public sides of the life of this famous man. The book is primarily intended for enthusiasts, biographers, and other researchers of this American scholar. The book consists of finished and incomplete works, and plans for new ones in the form of tables of contents (often in different versions), as well as drafts, outlines, letters, interviews, reports, and teaching materials (lesson plans, exercises for students and lecture notes).
