Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present a sociological discussion on innovativeness and to reveal the interpretative potential of this analytical category. The primary trait of this category is its dichotomy, which can be understood by means of the bipolar analysis carried out in the article. Innovativeness lies, respectively, between that which is axiological and praxological, elitist and egalitarian, individual and systemic, and is recognized as explanans and explanandum of sociological analysis – it is an absolute and a servant category at the same time. On the one hand, it is possible to explain innovativeness solely by discussing its basic theoretical paradigms (cultural, entrepreneurial and technical ones) while, on the other hand, incorporation of innovativeness as a category could be used to explain the process of social change. Dichotomy of the category adopted in this analysis makes it its subject and its methodology at the same time.
