Summary/Abstract: The development of industry and civilization brings a threat not only to human health and life, but also to the environment. As far as property damage is easy to replace, the establishment and valuation of environmental pollution is generally unmeasurable, and restoring to the orginal state before the damage often impossible. Determining the extent of the damage from a liability standpoint, one has to specify both the costs of avoiding possible contamination, the costs incurred in removing the effects of pollution and the costs of restoration to the environment to its state before pollution. The aim of the article is to provide an overview of environmental responsibility in Poland in the context of risk awareness of this issue. We present also the results of our own research in the research project “Environmental evolution of the financial market (EcoFin)” conducted with Bank Zachodni WBK of the Santander Universidades.
