Summary/Abstract: The United Kingdom’s Renegotiation of its EU Membership - A new Settlement forthe UK in a reformed EU whose keyword is “more flexibility” is in fact merely putting backon the agenda one of the very substantial questions of the European construction: what future for the EU – “more integration towards a political union” or more “intergovernmentalism”? This publication refers to just one of the four fundamental axis contained in the“baskets” of the negotiations led by the UK, namely the Sovereignty. The demand for modifications on the scale of the sovereignty could be qualified as the most fundamental demandof the British government, whose long term objective would be the inversion of the balancein favor of the member states, the repatriation of certain competencies, that have alreadybeen attributed to the Union and the formal creation of a “Differentiated Integration”, asan alternative of an “Ever closer Union“. The article contains a detailed analysis of the 3 main priorities which are part of this “Sovereignty” section, namely the end of Great Britain’s obligation to work towardsan ever closer Union, the enhancement the role of national parliaments and the full implementation of the principle of subsidiarity.
