Summary/Abstract: 2015 was a year no one inside Greece will easily forget. With the change of government and Alexis Tsipras from the leftist SYRIZA party becoming Prime Minister a period of profound uncertainty about the future course of the country only ended when a third financial assistance programme was agreed with international creditors in August 2015. The threat of 'Grexit' from the euro zone was real and could only be overcome at the last minute of dramatic negotiations in Brussels. The contribution analyzes the unfolding events and the political economy consequences for the country and Greece's relationship with its European partners as well as international creditors. The outlook for 2016 remains challenging, all the more as the emerging refugee and migration crises create new policy conditionalities for Greece and its relationship with Europe.
