Summary/Abstract: Since 25 January 2015 Greece is being governed by a coalition of the radical left party SYRIZA and the populist rightwing Independent Greeks. SYRIZA won the parliamentary elections on the promise to end austerity measures, keeping the Euro, declaring that the Troika is a thing of the past and restore the "dignity" of the Greek people. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had to make numerous concessions and has adopted a more moderate stance in dealing with other European governments. Rapidly emptying state coffers and the looming "Grexit" obliged him to do so. While support for his policies within the Greek population is still strong, there is considerable pressure from the Greek media and the "Institutions" (the former Troika). But Tsipras has to juggle divergent voices within his own party. The so-called Left Platform demands a complete rejection of the existing bailout programme.
