The Religions of Albania

Summary/Abstract: Enver Hoxha's totalitarian rule is not based on Marx/Engels, Lenin, Stalin. Rather, his and his party's motivating force is deeply embedded in Albanian history. The Albanian communists, to be sure, understand and describe this history exclusively from the point of view of "national character", which especially affects the three religious communities - Mohammedans, Catholics and the Orthodoxes. They are bitterly persecuted by "people's power". However, the anti-religious attitude in Albania has its roots in the nineteenth century, when "national character" played a central role in the political struggle. Symptomatic examples show how the Labor Party of Albania falsifies the latest history of the three religious communities.
